Conflict: It's 10:00am and you want a nice, celebratory Holiday drink. But, it's 10:00am and you are limited on your appropriate choices. You don't want to look like a lush in front of your Auntie Martha and frankly, her judging eye is already on high alert from the "hooker" heals you wore last night at dinner.

Introducing: Rosemary's Baby. There's orange juice in it so it's morning appropriate and it tastes delicious- so much so that Auntie Martha can't complain. My dear friend, Janet, and I created this drink Thanksgiving morning while waiting for a bird to cook. We made a pitcher.

Rosemary's Baby:
2 part orange juice
1 part rum
1/2 part triple sec
splash of simple syrup
Rosemary sprig
Orange slice to garnish

Lola's Brining recipe:
Mix in a bowl the following:
1 cup salt (Kosher is better)
1 cup brown sugar
3-4 sprigs of rosemary
1 orange peel shaved
1 tablespoon of pepper

Fill a large cooler with cold water and mix in the brine. Then place in your turkey and let it set over night. The next morning, take your bird out of the brine and set in a roasting pan. I like to give it a little coat of melted butter, which gives it that crispy, gold skin.

This year, I wanted to go as the Price is Right. I convinced my friends into going along with this idea with the drawing below.

Here is the final costume, complete with a Bob Barker. I designed the number boards and pasted them together with a tri-fold presentation board, held together with ribbon. Costume was a success! (but costume has also been completely destroyed by one night of chaos and wine. Oh well)

At Fenway seeing my beloved Red Sox

My friends, Friend's mom, me and My mom.

One of the best things about moving back to Maine (ahem, 2 years ago) is the ability to take my mom on these fun trips with my friends. She works with the mother of a good friend of mine so it makes it convenient for Mommy/Daughter stuff. Like this trip to the Red Sox: she had a bus buddy. I knew it was going to be a good trip when my mom brought out the cooler packed with beer, booze, cheese, crackers and PB+J sandwiches.

It's great getting to know my Mom now without the distractions of living at home, teen angst, mother's worry or anything else. Now, we actually want to spend time with each other- which is totally opposite of even just a few years ago. Don't get me wrong- we still drive each other totally batshit crazy. But now it's ok. So cheers to that.

Dempsey Challenge!

Actor and Mainer Patrick Dempsey hosts a wonderful fundraiser yearly for the Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing. I recently raised $460 through the Dempsey Challenge and biked 50 miles this past Sunday around Central/Lewiston Maine. I was biking in memory of a dear family friend who passed away in March 2010.

Summer is nearing a close. Soon it will be red leaves, cold air, ballet flats and itchy sweaters. Not to mention, a yearly case of bronchitis that springs up around November. Can't. Wait.

But it was a good summer, full of camping, beaching, concerts on the pier, ferry rides to the island, drinking cold bevages while floating down a river, out of state visitors, bicycle rides until my legs are numb, climbing rocks, laughing so hard with friends around a campfire that you cry, dance parties, sewing/failure nights and honey tea vodka. Goodbye dear summer. Can't wait until we meet again.

My Shark week cupcake fail

So... not a success. Apparently twinkies don't want to be dipped into greyish chocolate. And aparently as much as I like to bake, it does not make me any good.

So I salvaged as much as I could from the somewhat expensive ordeal and made a few shark fins. Those are barbie arms reaching out for dramatic effect (left over from a barbie cake- also a disaster)

More fail: I showed my mother a picture of this cake and she was so mortified that I spent money on such a catastrophe.

Penguin LOVE

True story:
When I was younger, I used to visit my grandmother in DC in the summer for a few weeks. We would always go to the zoo and one time, I got a stuffed penguin from the gift shop which I affectionately named Iceberg. I've had this penguin for MANY years, all through childhood, and even dragged him along to college where he kindly never judged my actions. We all have that stuffed animal or what have you that has seen more birthdays that Fred Willard's Smuckers jars.

A few weeks back, my roommate was in DC for uber important stuff and got me a stuffed baby penguin at the gift shop. It's one of the sweetest things I've ever received and so ironic that both penguins are from the same place. I named him Ice-cube.

So here's to the adults out there with a stuffed animal still gracing their bed. And to sweet roommates.

In Davis Square outside of Boston, there is this adorable shop (I think called Lucy's?) that sells vintange and re-purposed furniture. The owner was this sweet little Brazillian man who had done most of the reupholstery and painting himself. It's hard to tell from the picture but the walls were more of a bright lime green. Definitely a cool gem in the city.

Yes, I was really not in the spot very well to begin with but this is Maine and no one drives/parks well. I felt like a principal at a school dance separating the two.

Project of the month: Re-upholster a chair

I found this chair for $10 on craigslist. It didn't look like much. The fabric was a little gnarly and frayed- but the frame was there. I saw it's potential to be a fantastic desk chair.

Here's the money-runny: The paint cost around $10 (but I had some spray paint lying around from a previous project.) The fabric was $7 from IKEA- I know! IKEA!? - so all together this was around $27 for a new desk chair that I love.

First I pulled off all the fabric with heavy duty pliers. You have to be careful to remove all staples. Next, with all the fabric and padding removed, sand down the frame and clean. Then spray paint away! But be sure to do this outside as my apartment hallway was probably a poor choice of location by making people high for a few days. Then fold in the fabric around the padding and staple with a staple gun back in place on the under-side. Each chair is slightly different but I was able to staple the fabric in and screw the seat cushion in place.
